Captain M D TARR OBE BSc Royal Navy

Known as ‘Jack’ from school days onwards, he joined the Royal Navy as a seaman officer in 1976. In his early career, he served in a number of frigates and destroyers, specialising in surface and anti-air warfare, eventually commanding the Type 42 Destroyer HMS EDINBURGH. As Chief-of-Staff to the UK’s Amphibious Task Group, he saw active service in operations in Sierra Leone during 2000. He was promoted to Captain in 2002 on posting to HQ Allied Forces Northern Europe, where he had responsibility for the conduct of emerging NATO operations in Afghanistan. He was awarded the NATO Meritorious Service Medal in 2004, and appointed OBE in recognition of his services to NATO in Turkey and Afghanistan.

More recently, he has spent 3 years on Loan Service with the Royal Navy of Oman and, in April 2010, assumed the post of Commanding Officer HMS NEPTUNE and Captain of the Base, HM Naval Base Clyde.

He was voted onto the Board of Trustees of the MRI in November 2010.
