Newtonhill community funding for Sri Lanka search and rescue service

MRI had already been providing expertise in identifying a strategy and helping with profiling in order to develop a search and rescue service in Sri Lanka when the Tsunami hit in December 2004, with complete devastation to most of its coastal regions and in particular to its small fishing communities which we, here in the north east, can identify with.

MRI has been tireless in its efforts to secure major funding to enable the regeneration, progression and sustainability of these communities.  It is especially rewarding for us to have the community in and around Newtonhill appreciate our efforts so much that, led by Bobby Annand, they have raised £900 for the first ‘Skateraw’ boat to be provided through MRI to one of the worst areas hit.

The money will go directly to the most needy in an area called Hambantota in Sri Lanka, and will be used to build four Catamarans named after the original area of Newtonhill 'Skateraw'.  The boats will be Skateraw I, Skateraw II, Skateraw III and Skateraw IV.  It is hoped that this will be a long relationship between Hambantota and Newtonhill - leading into links between the local schools etc. over a 5 year period.

Thank you Newtonhill.
