Stonehaven Harbour Festival 2007

A great family day out at Stonehaven Harbour, Sunday 12 August, from noon until 4.30 pm.

Viking Longship 'Dim Riv'

On Saturday 11 August 2007 a Shetland Viking Longship (Dim Riv, which means dawn) will sail into Stonehaven to play its part in the Maritime Rescue Institute's annual Harbour Festival. With its huge white sail, colourful shields and oars down each side, and a dragon's head at the helm it will be a very unusual sight on the high seas - providing a wonderful photo-opportunity!

The festival officially starts on Sunday 12 August at 12 noon with a traditional march down the High Street of the Maritime Rescue Institute Volunteers, Newtonhill Pipe Band and all those contributing to the day. The Viking Longship will remain in harbour for the day for the public to enjoy and visit.

Newfoundland dogsMRI has lined up various action-packed demonstrations throughout the day - the Trossachs Search and Rescue Team* with their collies, the Fife Newfoundland Dogs, the Bon Accord Silver Brass Band and the Newtonhill Pipe Band will take over the harbour. Iain Chalmers will demonstrate amazing chainsaw sculpture* and Don Grant will show that making a barrel isn't as easy as people might think.

Coastguard rescue helicopter S-92The Coastguard's new rescue helicopter - the S-92 - will be carrying out an exercise winching a number of people from MRI 42 onto the helicopter. From 4 pm onwards you can share the thrill of this
experience with the lucky participants as they are lifted up from the bay at the far side of the harbour.

Harbour FestivalEntertainment will include traditional music and crafts, as well as plenty of stalls to browse, games to play, and a climbing wall for children as well as Lucky Dip, Whack a RAT and Scoop a Duck. The Grampian Association of Storytellers will be weaving their magic spell, Archeolink will demonstrate ancient crafts and skills, while HM Coastguard have fun and games in store for the youngsters.

Stonehaven Yacht Club will ensure everyone has their fill of teas & coffees, plus strawberries, while the Lions Club see to the burgers. Ian Spink will be in attendance with freshly smoked Arbroath Smokies.

As usual, Ian Watson will be providing boat trips on the Lady Gail.

All of this in the picturesque setting of Stonehaven Harbour - all we need now is the weather.
