New Gear for a New Year
Stonehaven's Maritime Rescue Institute has been the recipient of great generosity in the new year, and you may spot members of the team working around the harbour looking particularly smart! This is thanks to many local supporters and contributions.
Aberdeen Students' Charities Campaign donated £2000 towards 17 new dry suits for the lifeboat crew. When manufacturers, Gill International Ltd, heard of MRI's work they radically slashed the price of each suit - the team can now respond to a call out in the knowledge that they'll be extra dry and warm!
Next the team needed better communications for hazardous situations so Anita Lawson, the wife of a lifeboat coxswain, ran the Loch Ness Marathon and raised £408. This was enough money to buy two radios complete with waterproofing which enables better communication between teams working on the cliffs and the boats.
The only thing missing was new protective head gear so team member Jacqui Ronald took part in the Baker Hughes 10K run raising over £100. This purchased a specially designed helmet that is used by MRI whilst operating their small rescue boat giving them excellent head and eye protection so they can concentrate on the job at hand.
