MRI Schools work and ClientsWhy MRI wants to be involved with Youth WorkThe decline of traditional maritime communities around the coast of the modernised world has had a significant impact on the arena of waterborne search and rescue, both in terms of the skills found among new recruits to lifeboat crews and the types of incidents occurring. In response to this trend, MRI made a strategic decision to develop a programme of youth activities. These activities support its aims of public education and accident prevention in the waterborne environment. The programmes also spearhead new strategies for the long term promotion of skills required for sustaining lifeboat crews and meeting the skills gap that has been identified and accepted across lifeboat organisations. The results and lessons of these youth activities have local significance, but also are shared among the wider international lifeboat community via various forums. Further, working with young people of all ages, abilities, background and needs challenges the methods MRI uses to deliver key skills to all its end-user groups: action-orientated team building, communication, environmental awareness, risk assessment, decision making process, collective problem solving, group management. The success and usefulness of the youth programmes already undertaken means that MRI is fully committed to delivery of youth programmes into the future.
