Ex fishing skipper, joined the RGIT School of Navigation in 1976 to assist the early development of the RGIT Offshore Survival Centre. Established the Offshore Maritime Rescue Project and the Maritime Rescue Section at Stonehaven in 1977. Privatised the Maritime Rescue Section into Maritime Rescue International Ltd and formed MRI Group based at its headquarters in Stonehaven, with subsidiary companies in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Somalia, UK and the USA. After the sale of the commercial trading assets of Maritime Rescue International Ltd in 2001, was Co Founder / Trustee of Maritime Rescue Institute.
